How to install macOS High Sierra from Terminal on a formatted 2009 iMac?

I’m attempting to clean a 2009 iMac and reinstall High Sierra. I’ve managed to format the drive as MacOS journaled and I’ve downloaded an archived install dmg to same. Can I launch that install from Terminal?

You can't run the installer via Terminal.app. The whole process is kind of convoluted.

For High Sierra you need to create a bootable installer on a USB Flash drive (or other external media). You then boot from that drive to wipe and reinstall a core OS on the machine.
