Why won't music files play in the Music app on my new MacBook Air?

Re: "when I open the Music App, it displays all the music files, but when I click on a song to play, and hit Play, the play indicator goes to 'Pause' momentarily (a normal occurrence), but then reverts to the 'Play' indicator without playing the song at all! Any idea what the problem is, as I am only new at using a Mac, so it's taking some time to understand the differences from Microsoft operations."
