Apple Music "Kind" Switched to "PDF" On Most Tracks 😤

Hi, Apple Community,

Sequoia 15.2 (24C101)

Apple Music 1.5.2.56

iMac 27-inch, 2020, Retina 5K

I have a Music library of 72,277 tracks, 867.48 GB, and it had been functioning well.

But last week, I found that many tracks had “Show composer in all views” unchecked, so I selected all the tracks and clicked on the check box.

A little later I found in "Get Info" that a music track “Kind,” which had been an “Apple Lossless Audio File” now appeared as “PDF.”

Then I discovered, when I sorted the library by “Kind,” that all the tracks FOLLOWING the sole PDF in my library now appeared as “PDF's,” while those preceding the PDF were correctly listed as AAC’s, Apple Lossless, or MPEG.

(The demarcation point was a PDF of a U2 CD, downloaded as a freebie from iTunes years ago, with the U2 music tracks.)

All of my tracks are playing correctly, and the files in Finder appear unaffected with the correct "Kind."

I’ve seen several “fixes,” in Apple Community and elsewhere online, all of which require deleting “Music Library.musiclibrary” in Users/User/Music.

Does anyone have any thoughts about what has happened here, and the best way to get Apple Music to display the correct “Kind?”

Thanks in advance.

See Move your iTunes/Music library to a new computer or drive - Apple Community and Managing your Mac media libraries - Apple Community for some background advice. It should be possible to copy the active library to <New External>/Music/Music Library.musiclibrary, option-start-Music to open this new copy, reset the media folder to <New External>/Music/Media, and then consolidate the library. My hunch is that should still all work correctly, but I've not personally run across this issue. I'd be interested to know if the corruption is within the library itself, or the app. If you'd care to send me a zipped up copy of your .musiclibrary file I could see if it presents the same way on my machine, and if it does if there is any way I can use AppleScript to repair existing entries while preserving metadata.

You can restore a recent backup, then add the media folder to add in any recent additions. Doing it this way preserves playlists and all but recent ratings, plays, etc. Before you do anything however, is this essentially a cosmetic issue? Do the tracks still play correctly in Music, or does it attempt to open Acrobat Reader or similar?

Yours is the only thread I've seen on this issue so far. It might be that the app has somehow corrupted the associations between filetypes and their Kind descriptions. You cannot directly reinstall the app on its own without reinstalling the operating system. The last update was February 10, with a new release currently in beta so hopefully due out soon. With luck that might resolve the problem.

Thanks.

My tracks play fine and I wouldn't know the difference.

I have read elsewhere that the wrong "Kind" could matter if I move the media (which I may have to do soon as my external storage, where I keep my tracks, will fill up this year).

I'm being very cautious -- don't want to mess with the Music Library.musiclibrary file if I don't have to.
