Is there an option to remove a passcode remotely from a managed iphone or is the only option is to erase the whole phone?

It is part of the MDM spec. Whether or not your MDM supports it is a different question.
It may depend on the MDM being used and whether it is a supervised device, but yes, it should be possible to remove the passcode using the MDM.
I know you can do that on supervised devices. Not sure if you can on ‘managed’ devices. There is a difference. managed devices are typically BYOD units. Supervised devices are usually purchased through Apple’s DEP.
Oh I apologize, I did forget to add that detail - I know you can with JAMF MDM but can you with Apple Business Essentials MDM ?
I believe so, but I can’t check first hand, I use intune and (previously) miradore.
