Music on the hard drive plays but not music from Apple Music
I spent 2 hours online and then on the phone to Apple Support without a result. The final suggestion was to reinstall MacOS which didn’t solve the problem.
finally I took the nuclear option. Erased the hard drive, installed MacOS from scratch and restored data and apps from Time Machine. Everything now works as it should.

Hmm, that's odd. Anything changed recently? New security software, VPN, firewall, etc. that might block Apple Music from streaming. You can download stuff that is currently in the cloud and then play from local storage? Or did you copy downloaded Apple Music subscription content from one computer to another and then try to add it to a different library? Because that won't fly.

Yes - and Apple music plays on my iPhone and iPad.
used Migration assistant now Apple Music won't play
