Unloaded extensions - Should I delete them?

I know there's an issue with unloaded extensions and potentially receiving an error message. I haven't received any messages about unloaded extensions but I do have many from a 1/15/2025 update, and a few from earlier dates. I'm not sure if my issue is the same as the known issue - the extensions are from Apple and not notarized or signed although about 25% of the unloaded extensions were noted as signed and notarized - those look just like row 7 in the screenshot. Since the 1/15/2025 update, I've had another update. If extensions were included they must have loaded successfully as there are no unloaded extensions from after 1/15/2025. I have a new update and wanted to know if I should do anything with these unloaded extensions prior to the new update. Is it safe to delete the unloaded extensions?

Thank you.

Hi Barney-15E,

I wasn't suggesting removing installed extensions - the unsigned and not notarized extensions haven't been installed - correct? If unloaded, won't my Mac eventually notify me of unloaded extensions? I got that info here: About system extensions and macOS - Apple Support

I'm not experiencing any problems I'm aware of, just thought there's no need to keep them if they won't be loaded. I can see from those older ones at the top in the folder just stay there, so why keep them?

Thanks for letting me know they're installed as needed - I can see it's beneficial to keep the unloaded one that are notarized and signed but will the unsigned and not notarized extensions ever be loaded? If they wont, is there a reason to keep them? There were no unloaded extensions from the update after 1/15/2025, could that update have included fixed extensions? Thanks.

Ok thanks. I understand they are loaded as needed but why would only extensions from the 1/15/2025 update not being installed, why no extensions from any other update waiting to be installed if need. This seems specific. I'm not experiencing any problems with my Mac except for 90 or more uninstalled extensions all from one update with the majority indicated as not signed or notarized. Thanks again, I appreciate your assistance and will check with support.

I only see unloaded extensions in the screenshot provided. My questions were regarding unloaded extensions. I understand they are loaded as needed but why are there only unloaded extensions from the 1/15/2025 update? Is it unusual to have only unloaded extensions from a specific update and none from the update after that? I can see some are from Apple, not sure about others but the detail of most have a reason for why it wont be loaded, see detail of 2 below - will those with a validation failure be loaded if needed ? That linked article above indicates unloaded extensions with issues could cause further issues if there is an attempt to load them - is that correct? If they cannot be loaded, are they eventually shed or just stay there forever? That is my concern, not any current problem, that I'm aware of, with my Mac.

I can't offer anything more than what I noted.

I don't have an Intel Mac, so I can't even compare to what I have. My extension list doesn't have all of those columns.

If it bothers you, erase your Mac and reinstall macOS.

You can't delete them, easily.

For those you note are not loaded, do you have another version with the same name that is loaded? Perhaps the update installer didn't clear out the old ones.
