I was at the Apple store and the rep sold me a 42 mm band for my 41 mm watch. It stuck out on the edges so I returned it.
I'm looking for a smooth (not braided) solo loop. My present watch band (came with watch) says 41 mm. Watch says 41 mm. Is braided my only option?
If I go down to 40 mm on the smooth, will it be just as dumb as the 42 was? :)

Hello @Cecilialibra! I currently have a 40mm apple watch with the Textile Sport Loop (velcro strap), and I like it- only downside is its not the best for swimming. And if you go down on the "smooth" then that will not look bad. Braided is not your only option, You can get a rubber solo loop as well! I would always recommend that you buy from the official Apple website so you don't have the risk of getting scammed with the cheaper and off-brand bands.

For an exact fit, yes, only a 41mm band would work regardless of type.
38mm, 40mm, 41mm, and 42mm bands are compatible with 38mm, 40mm, 41mm, 42mm case sizes.
But yes smaller bands will have some space in the connector and larger bands will stick out to the sides. That's a physical constraint of physical dimensions not being exactly the same.
