How do I change Siri’s response when I say “hey Siri“?

How can I change Siri’s response when I say “Hey Siri” on my iPhone 16 Pro?

I frequently work in dimly lit and confined spaces, several feet from my phone. I need my phone to respond in a loud and clear voice when I call to it. Currently, all it does is highlight the screen in a psychedelic manner and then buzz.

In previous versions, the phone would at least reply with “uh huh.” I assume that with Siri’s upgrade, there are more possible responses.

So, what’s the secret to unlocking Siri’s full capabilities?

Easiest: State your request immediately. Don’t wait for Siri feedback. If you’ve met the “uh-huh”, you’re waiting.

What you’re seeking: Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Siri Responses > Prefer Spoken Responses

...And Siri's volume is independent of the system volume. To know Siri's current speaking volume, say: "Hey Siri, what's your volume?"

To set Siri's volume: "Hey Siri, speak at 50%." (or other %.) ...Or: "Hey Siri, speak louder / softer."

Or:

Whilst Siri is speaking, press the volume buttons up or down. (If Siri isn't currently speaking, ask Siri to tell you a joke or recite a poem.) Then next time, Siri should speak at the volume you've just set.
