new Mac Pro app icons all gone after transfer from old Mac

just got new Mac Pro, I used transfer function and transferred all files from old to new Mac Pro.

all the applications icons have disappeared and there is no longer a button on keyboard to do the app search.

how do I get all icons back on screen so I can scroll left and right to find what I want
