Finder settings keep resetting on MacBook Pro

One day the layout changed and started opening other folders when I double clicked instead of replacing the with contents of folder in same window. I keep changing it in settings but it reverts to this and now i cannot find my other folders/drives in the left sidebar. What did I do wrong????
