iPhone not alerting for text message when wearing Apple Watch

I know this question was asked awhile back, but someone said that the watch and phone could not alert at the same time. Untrue- when getting a phone call, both the watch and the phone ring (alert). But when receiving a text, only the watch alerts. I am missing texts because of this. Any recent comments available? No the phone is not on silent.
