Swapping SIM cards between two different iPhones

If I copy the data from my old iPhone (iPhone 8) to my new iPhone (iPhone 12) using my iCloud backup, can I transfer the old phone number to the new phone by simply swapping the SIM card from the old iPhone to the new iPhone? Is this safe or will there be any unfortunate consequences?
