Problems with Siri hearing me

I have a new MacBook Pro running Sonoma. I'm trying to get Siri to hear me, but there aren't controls to get it to work. I say Hey Siri and it does nothing. I have turned it on and off and retrained it several times now. I have to click on it every time to get it to respond. When I ask it how to keep it responding, or how to train it, or even why doesn't hey Siri work, It just keeps telling me about how important my privacy is, and pulls up irrelevant answers that have nothing to do with Siri. Once it has given me a list of websites, it stops listening to me.

Since I need this computer because I'm having trouble typing due to repetitive strain injuries, having to click back-and-forth constantly to get Siri to listen is defeating the purpose of the exercise. It works in the phone, why doesn't it work in the MacBook Pro? The dictation it's doing in this text box is exactly what I need! I just need it to see the rest of the computer, and the rest of whatever program I'm working in.

I've been all through the settings menus, and the Apple website.

I'm looking for a good tutorial that doesn't require me to watch a million videos and sit through basic things like how to turn on voice control. It's already on. I understand how to dictate, and "Hey Siri" works on every device I own except for this brand new MacBook pro. What gives?

Hi, and welcome to this Apple (user-to-user) Community!

Re: Problems with Siri hearing me

Wondering if you may have a "Do Not Disturb" / focus on, maybe accidentally.

If needed: How to: Turn a Focus on or off on Mac - Apple Support

or

whether the volume for your microphone may be set a bit low ?

(Apple menu > System Settings > Sound > Input .... there's an input "slider ")

If you want to check or experiment with the mic mode currently in use:

See: Use Mic Modes on your Mac - Apple Support

Am not very familiar with Voice Control, so you likely know muc more about that:

Customize Voice Control on Mac - Apple Support has some good tips.

Re: Siri: " I have turned it on and off"

NB: Turning Siri off may mean you need to customize the Siri settings again when you turn it back on.

Re: "I've been all through the settings menus, and the Apple website. "

Then I guess that includes choosing the "Listen for" option :

ie: Apple menu > System Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or > Siri in the sidbar if you scroll down)

and

if you wanted: maybe you set a "Keyboard Shortcut" there, in order to quickly activate Siri as required.

or

If your Mac has one, mayb you can use a Siri icon in the MacBook Pro's "touch" control to activate Siri

Not exactly a tutorial, yet if you haven't discovered it already:

The Mac User Guide is available online: Mac User Guide - Apple Support

The "Table of Contents" can be reached from the link on the Welcome page,

That lists various topics, that lead to detailed articles. It's fairly easy to simply "zero" in on the info. you want by using the guide's included "Search" input field.

(NB: User Guides for the various Mac apps are also available,)

All the best :-)
