Close all open applications and files at one time.

I know you can click on the menu at the top left to close an application. I know you can press command q to quit out of an app and I know you can alternate command q and command tab a bunch of times until every application is closed. But it seems like there should be an item in the apple menu that will close "everything" and leave the system like it was when you booted up.

You don't need Command-tab in this instance - just Command-Q -Q -Q until they are all quit (hold down the Command key and press Q as many times as running apps). While you can use an Automator workflow or Shortcuts shortcut to do it, I don't think it's worth the effort - for example, I have 13 apps running and it would take some 5 seconds to quit them all.
