How can I resolve iPad Air backup issues?

It keeps telling me to back my ipad up, but when I try it just gets to a random number of minutes remaining, then the number just keeps going up and doesn't actually do anything. Then I have to cancel the backup, close everything, open it again a few times for it to actually cancel, then I lock it and connect it to power and WiFi for it to automatically backup, and it does the same thing. How do I actually back this ipad up?

If your iPad is not operating as expected, begin with a forced-restart of your iPad - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:


Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

  1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
  2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
  3. Press and hold the top button.
  4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Native iOS/iPadOS backup and restore processes are dependent upon iCloud, or connection to either Windows PC (with iTunes for Windows installed) or a Mac (with iTunes or Finder - as appropriate for the installed version of macOS).


Natively supported methods offer full system backup - consisting of data and device settings.
