You're not alone in having difficulty using TouchID. I too have seasonal issues with TouchID devices, usually during winter, when humidly is low and skin is particularly dry.

TouchID is usually reliable with regular use (the sensor updates its biometric map with every successful fingerprint authentication), however, prevailing conditions can be problematic for a completely healthy TouchID sensor.

Some users just have difficulty using TouchID. The causes for of TouchID being unreliable for some users - and not others - are many. Whilst not an exhaustive list, possibilities include:

  • Very high humidity (“sweaty” fingers)
  • Very low humidity (excessively dry skin)
  • Poor fingerprint ridge-detail (excessive hand washing - or exposure to abrasive material, damaging fingerprint detail)
  • Physical injury (cuts or splits to the fingertip)

If you have naturally dry skin, try using a “light” (non greasy) and easily absorbed skin moisturiser.

Unless there's something wrong with your iPad or your finger, it should remember it until you change it.

Things that can interfere with TouchID include moisture, lotions, skin conditions like eczema, callouses like the ones you get from playing an instrument like a guitar, other damage to the skin on your fingertips.

Have you tried using a different finger?

The touch page is complete, I have used all of it in history, several times. Most of the other apps accept the finger touch. There needs to be more than only 5 fingers accepted

You can register up to five individual fingerprints at any one time.

Should you need to do so, unused or unresponsive registered fingerprints can be individually deleted - after which you can register a replacement.

I have the same problem on my iPad mini 5 and have been having it for years.

This answer while sounding reasonable, unfortunately does not apply to my situation, since I am using several Android devices with fingerprint ID, and I have never experienced problems like this on them. The frequency of use is comparable, the conditions and fingers are the same
