How do I justify a poem with custom line breaks in Pages?

I just about gave up on this problem. Lots of old posts that ended-up saying (1) Word processors do not do this, only in MS Word, etc. Not helpful. Then I stumbled on how to do it in Pages! It;s not obvious, sop I thought I'd share. I wanted to format a poem, justidfyinfg the lines left and right, but the lines of the poem need to break where the poets wants them to break. Here's how:

  1. Copy and paste the poem into the Page doc. Mine had paragraph breaks after each line, but this trick works if your poem has lines breaks instead of paragraph breaks.
  2. Set the column with to a just big enough to hold the longest line. Use the View menu and "Show Layout" and "Show Invisibles"
  3. Select the entire poem, and switch the style to Justify. Nothing will change becasue of the paragraph (or line) breaks at the end of each line.
  4. Go to the start of the 2nd line and hit the delete key. The will merge the 1st and 2nd line. Now hit the space bar until the 1st and 2nd lines break at just the right spot. Be careful! Use just enough spaces to break the lines correctly!
  5. If you have problem lines, you can put extra spaces between the words on that line, then adjust the font size of those extra spaces to get the kerning and spacing you want!

It's not a perfect result, but it sure beats using an image of the text properly justified by another app.

– Hope this helps if you have this problem,

Jim C
