I would really like to turn of the screen light of my iPhone esp at night. Like before last couple updates when we were able to press side button and light would go off phone clearly off. Now it’s strange nothing will turn the light off. It’s strange and don’t like it. I should be able to force my screen to go dark….. but no, it’s always lit up. Help …. Bring back the past please.

Apple hasn't changed the ability to lock your iPhone screen with any update. We need to understand why you seem to be able to lock your iPhone screen? You say using the side button, you can't lock your screen, correct? There isn't a setting to change to lock the screen using the side power button. So the first step would be to Force Restart your iPhone --> Force restart iPhone - Apple Support (CA)
I fhtat doesn't help, you may have a hardware issue with your iPhone and a visit to the Apple Store Genius Bar would be in order.
Also, have you gone to Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto Lock and made sure you have selected something other than Never as a lock option?
Do you have the Always on Display turned on your iPhone? Settings > Display & Brightness > Always On Display
