iMovie "Missing File" after moving library to external drive

Late '15 iMac, Monterrey 12.7.6. iMovie 10.3.8. I was running out of space on my SSD drive, so I researched, and followed the instructions in "Move your iMovie for Mac library". After moving the library file to an external 2Tb disc, and confirming that the move had apparently gone properly, I got iMovie to open exactly ONE time. Then iMovie would only open if I went into Finder, right-clicked on the library in the external drive, and selected "open with' (iMovie). That tactic worked 3 or 4 times more. Now, however, whenever I try to re-open iMovie, I'm seeing a banner with a big question mark ion and a message: "Missing File" and below that, a line showing (date and time) is missing. Try reimporting the original source media.

What is happening, what did I do wrong, and does this mean that I have to go back and re-capture all of the clips I've captured and digitized from my analog camcorder? This doesn't seem to be nearly so straightforward as the original "how to" article seemed to imply. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Possibly your external drive has not been properly prepared.

Apple says: "You can store your [iMovie] library on an external storage device such as a USB drive or Thunderbolt drive formatted as APFS or Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Apple doesn’t recommend storing iMovie libraries on storage devices like SD cards, USB flash drives, or drives shared on a network. You can’t store your library on a storage device used for Time Machine backups."

So, to start with, check to make sure that your external drive complies with the above.

Well, it seems quite possible that you are onto something with the suggestion to check the drive formatting. I admittedly do not well-understand all of the minutiae of disc formatting. However, when I went into Disc Utility, I discovered that there is sort of a “hierarchy” associated with that disc - sort of similar to folders and sub-folders (I think!) And the “sub-folder” was indeed formatted as APFS, but the ‘root” drive was something else (I’ve already forgotten details.) The actual disc was one I picked up used to replace an older disc that had recently died, and when I installed the “new” disc, it did not occur to me that I had to format the “root” drive.

I used Disc Utility and reformatted the “root” drive using Apple MacOS formatting. I’m now copying the iMovie library back onto that drive, a multiple-hour operation with my machine. When that’s done, I’ll re-check permissions and see if iMovie will find and open from the “updated” external drive. I’ll post results later, thanks again!

Solved! I forgot to mention earlier. I was talking to another Apple user friend about this, he had a similar problem with a 3rd party app (Lightroom) and discovered that he had to go into settings, then sharing, and “share files”. I tried that and it worked for me. Thanks for all of your help and suggestions!

Just to cover the bases, let's try one more thing:

Control-click on the external drive's icon and click on Get Info from the pop up menu. A box will appear that shows information about the drive, including permissions. At the very bottom of the box there should be a little box to check that says "Ignore ownership on this volume." Put a check in that box and see if that cures your issue. You will first need to unlock by clicking on the little lock symbol on the bottom right, and entering your user password.

After literally hours of moving the library file off the external drive, reformatting, returning the library file, double-checking permissions, etc., etc., I can open iMovie from the library file icon on the external drive, but attempting to open from the iMovie icon in LaunchPad still shows the “permissions error” pop-up.

At least I can open iMovie from the external drive and get on with my projects. Enuf time spent trying to sort out the ambiguities of iMovie itself. Thanks for all of the suggestions and support!

APFS - indeed! Guess I’m getting a bit dyslexic in my older years. I was aware what “case sensitive” means, I just wasn’t sure if adding that constraint might be part of my problem. Thanks for the link to the explanation. I’ll be doing some exploring to see if that slight detail is part of the problem.
