Table of contents shows the whole paragraph

I want my header and my subtitles to appear in the table of contents. My paragraph will be in the body style when I try to highlight just part of the sentence to change it to a subtitle. The whole paragraph James is to a subtitle and is appears in the table of contents. I only want four or five words on the first line to appear in the table of contents
