Background App Refresh stopped working after iOS 18.3 update on iPhone

I upgraded to IOS 18.3 and noticed that the applications stopped working in the background anymore.

The music or calls will stop when I switch to another app!

I checked the background app refresh and it’s on.

any ideas?

It wasn’t jail broken no. I have an iPhone 15 Pro so I don’t think there is a system issue here except the iOS because everything was working fine before that. After the update I was on a teams call and wanted to check my mail but the call stopped. Then while listening to music I opened a delivery app that doesn’t use microphone and the music stopped. I tested it with other things and the same happened. If you have a solution please share if not thank you for your questions.

That has nothing to do with Background App Refresh. Background App Refresh downloads data in the background to apps that would otherwise be suspended so that when you return to them, you have fresh content.

Which apps, specifically, are you having issues with?

It's not always the iOS update's fault!  Many things can cause phone problems.  If you tell people you think it's an iOS update, it might make it harder to fix or find a solution for the real issue.

Remember, the right question often leads to the solution!

Was/Is your device Jailbroken? If that's the situation, please be informed that attributing the issues to iOS updates may not be accurate.

iOS updates aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. The majority of the issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

Kindly consider checking your settings and addressing any device issues before attributing the issue to external factors. This could be a pure coincidence that the iOS update affected the iPhone functions.

Before initiating a standard iOS update, it's advisable to create a backup. Have you completed this step? If yes, proceed with the restoration from the backup.

From IA request:

If your Background App Refresh feature stopped working on your iPhone after updating to iOS 18.3, it's likely a known bug related to the update, and you should first check your settings to ensure Background App Refresh is enabled for the specific apps you want to refresh in the background, then try restarting your phone and checking for app updates; if the issue persists, it might be a software glitch that needs to be addressed by Apple through a future iOS update.

How to check and troubleshoot:

  • Verify Background App Refresh settings:
    • Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh.
    • Ensure the toggle is on for the apps you want to refresh in the background.
  • Restart your iPhone: Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches.
  • Check for app updates: Make sure all your apps are updated to the latest version in the App Store.
  • Check for Low Power Mode: If Low Power Mode is enabled, it can restrict background activity.
  • Check your network connection: Ensure you have a stable Wi-Fi or cellular data connection.
  • Report the issue to Apple: If the problem persists after trying these steps, consider reporting the issue to Apple through their feedback channels.
