The title is self-explanatory. I tried locating the old backup because I need content from it, but it seems the new backup I created to get my iPhone ready for service deleted the old backup or it was overwritten. Is there any way of recovering the old backup?

Sorry, but no. Backups update only the data that has changed since the previous backup, so there is really only one backup stored on iCloud or a computer......unless you are "archiving" backups by manually saving and creating a new title / date for each one individually.
