How can I fix Outlook.com email access problems on Safari?

Using Safari Sequoia I lose access to Outlook.com email daily. This is intermittent and happens daily. I have turned of cross-site tracking and still lose access to Outlook.com daily. Please help with this.

I, too, have the very same issue. Since a previous update (I'm not entirely sure which) accessing Outlook mail via access using Safari has been broken. I can typically read emails for some undetermined amount of time with no interruption in home internet, only to come back and find that the page will not refresh. When I do, I'll either get a broken envelope/exclamation screen or a screen telling me that "Something went wrong...." and a button to refresh the page -- which never does a thing. Clearing the cache of outlook/live-related data has no effect either.

And it most definitely IS a Safari issue.

I've used Firefox, Chrome and Brave for extended durations (4-6 weeks at a time) and they never have the issue. Disabling Private IP Relay does nothing. Using WiFi vs. Wired, no change.

I am saying that one or both of the following happens daily when I sign into Outlook.com the web-based email:

  1. Outlook.com will not come to the screen. The animated envelope bounces several times and an error screen appears telling me to retry. Retry does not resolve the issue.
  2. Outlook.com opens and functions then when attempting to open about the 4th email a large exclamation point appears and a message telling me to retry. Retry does not resolve the issue.

One of these two things has been happening daily for two months for the Oulook.com email. Using the Mac Email as a dedicated email client is a go-around but doing so loses some of the functionality of Outlook.com. Through the Mac Email app, an abbreviated form of Outlook comes to the screen. I go back to when email began with this account. The Microsoft community suggests it to be a Sarfari issue. The issue began with the latest update to Sequoia.

I will have to research what a non-web-based email is. It takes the web to telecommunicate emails. Perhaps Cloud-based is an alternative to web-based. I do not use a cloud account. Maybe this is archaic but it has been preferred by me for many years.

I want to avoid the monumental task of changing my email address so I am seeking a solution for my Hotmail.com account now accessed by Outlook.com when operating. This problem is intermittent with no apparent reason for occurring daily.

I come from the past, not as a time traveler, but as an old person.

The problem we are trying to address here is specifically Safari and Outlook Web access. A number of us are trying to avoid using the Outlook app because Outlook for Mac does not allow you to set or reduce the local cache size. This results in Outlook taking up a very large portion of disk space that we don't want to deal with. So using the app is not a solution for us.

Safari is a browser

Sequoia is the current macOS 15.2

Are you saying you connect to your outlook .com mail thought the browser(Webmail or web-based email)...(?)

a bit archaic today, some still prefer it I guess.

I would try a different browser and compare your results.

or set up a dedicated mail client for email

Outlook.com should work, I use it on occasion. You should try it with a different browser, such as Firefox and/or Chrome. I find it works well for all three. You might have something installed with your Safari (an extension) or something on your Mac that is interfering.

Here is a suggestion: Apple Mail can be used to access Outlook emails but the functionality is limited, as you have noticed. I think your best approach is to use the Outlook app on your Mac. We have several thousand Microsoft Exchange email users where I work and everyone uses either the Microsoft Outlook application for the Mac, or sometimes the web based email. I believe you can obtain Microsoft Outlook for your Outlook email free from Microsoft. That implementation will be smoothest -- the Outlook app is designed to be used with Outlook (Microsoft Exchange) email and with Hotmail.

The problem with OutLook continues with intermittency. It will work a few days then go out again. The Mail app on Mac will bring Outlook mail to screen but only the focused inbox. I cannot access junk mail where so often new emails go. Something has happened to Safari that sabotages Outlook. I can't help but wonder if this is another ploy to force Apple users into iCloud accounts.

I have been having this problem on my new iPhone16 trying to access my Hotmail via the outlook live website using Safari for a number of months now. It is intermittent, but happens more often than not now. But I don’t have this issue on my MacBook Air with Safari. I am still using Monterey on my Mac.

I also prefer the functionality of the website version on outlook live than the mail app.

I have no problem with the web version using chrome on my iphone16, so I am using this now.

Interestingly, after opening seamlessly in Chrome on my iPhone 16, if I then refresh in Safari it loads no problem. Don’t know what that’s about?

It is strange that Apple’s web browser is the browser with issues loading my Hotmail via outlook live on my Apple iPhone16, but not Chrome.

Well if you are successful accessing your Outlook email via the Apple Mail app, then it certainly points to Safari to being the culprit. As such, trying another web browser (I suggest Brave) and the issue does not reoccur, then we know something about Safari is not right.

... and yes, there are a number of ways you can access email with your Mac:

  • Via a web browser.
  • Via the Apple Mail app.
  • Via the Microsoft Outlook app.
  • Via dozens of other third-party mail apps.

One note of caution, with the Microsoft Outlook app. I believe this app is now a part of Microsoft's "new" Outlook; whereas, the "classic" app is still available. This issue with the new version is that any non-Microsoft email accounts you configure to use with it, will send/receive messages through the Microsoft servers before/after going to/from the third-party source servers.

That means, for example, if you configure the new Outlook app to be able to access your iCloud or Gmail mail, those messages will pass through the Microsoft servers. The classic version did not do this and messages went directly from the mail app to the third-party (iCloud or Gmail) servers directly.

With that said, I suggest that you avoid the Outlook app, and either use another web browser or continue to use Apple Mail to access your Outlook messages.

As I'm sure you are aware, the current Outlook mail has gone through many revisions since it was introduced as HoTMail in 1996.

Regardless, Microsoft latest rendition Outlook.com can be accessed either by a web browser and most dedicated email clients, like Apple Mail ... and yes, its overall functionality is different depending on which access method you use.

The key is your Microsoft user account credentials. If you have verified that there is no issue with them, then a number of other potential culprits need to be checked out.

My guess is that it could either be configuration settings in Safari or your local network settings.

Let's start with something simple. While you are logged into your Mac, create a new macOS user account. After doing so, log out of your current account, and then, log back in with this new account. Now try accessing your Outlook email via Safari to see if this resolved this issue. Please post back your results.

Thanks for the reply. 3 hours online today and the crash of Outlook.com has not occurred yet for the first time in over a month. Maybe a good gremlin has entered. The problem is not happening on my PC. I can work around it by using the Mac email app. Since I can use Outlook.com through the Apple email app, is there anything revealed as to the nature of the problem?
