How to Remove MDM Lock from a Purchased Mac Studio M2 Max?

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased a Mac Studio M2 Max from an eBay seller. After receiving it, I found out it has an MDM lock(Mobile Device Management lock).

Unfortunately, I was unaware of this at the time of purchase, although the seller did mention it in the listing, which I missed.

When I received the Mac Studio, it required me to contact the MDM administrator to unlock it. The seller has been unresponsive since I reached out.

Does anyone know if there’s a way for me to remove the MDM lock legally, or am I stuck with this issue? I would really appreciate any guidance or advice on how to resolve this.

Thanks in advance!

there is no way to remove most MDM lock except for the ones added for Parental Control.

That Mac can not be upgraded in this form, and is essentially unusable because of that.

if you have an unbroken trail of invoices for sales (that include serial numbers) back to the original Authorized Apple Reseller, the Genius Bar techs can completely ERASE that Mac for you.

Simple answer ... work with eBay to return this Mac Studio to get a full refund. It should NOT have been sold as it still may be the property of a company or educational institution. The fact that the seller is not responding could also indicate that the device was stolen.

A little too late now, but a word of advice: "Never buy expensive computer equipment from eBay or equivalent third-party sources."

As Grant Bennet-Alder has already mentioned, unless you can get a copy of the original purchase receipt ... not the one from eBay, Apple cannot help you remove the MDM restrictions.

There is no inexpensive way to deal with that on your own.

Apple is not going to want to touch that because it is in MDM lock.

You could look into replacing the motherboard- an expensive fix.

You could see if one of the motherboard repair companies in NY can do anything.

I am not sure which chip has this protection functionality so it may be something they cannot repair either. If it is part of the processor board, it is not clear that even replacing that would work.

Apple has been upping the security of its systems over the years now.

Look at youtube videos to see what might work.

You could sell it on ebay for parts.

You could take it to an Apple store and have them return it to the rightful owner - declare it as a loss in your business, assuming you are running a business.
