help with File for Apple Books

I use Pages, save to .epub. But my book online has issues, any to help me figure out what's wrong? Maybe Fixed v. Variable or something like that?

Cannot open local files on apple books I was able to open those files (epub) some time ago, however, recently, when I clicked those files on desktop or bookshelves in books. The page flashes to exit automatically. If anyone know how to solve the issues, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

Cannot open books in Apple Books: "formatted incorrectly" On my iMac I cannot open any books (nor samples) in the native Books app. Dialogue box says: "Cannot open book. It is formatted incorrectly or is not a format that Apple Books can open." I restarted he computer. Updated from Monterey to Ventura, etc. and no success. Books do open on my other devices. I have hundreds of books I read on the Mac. Any suggestions would be welcomed. Thanks.

epub files not working I've read through a few threads on this issue, mostly from some time ago, but none seem to offer a solution, or explanation as to why Apple have changed how books works so that any epub documents no longer work. I'm running Ventura but am aware that others have had issues with earlier os versions also. I have a library of several hundred epub books, direct from the publishers (not via apple store) & none work since updating to Ventura. I've tried deleting them & re-adding & even getting new epub files of some from the publishers. I've tried re-setting books also. I have seen some folks suggesting converting epub files to PDF but why do we, as customers, accept that? epub is a valid format & why should we allow Apple to do anything that means purchases aren't usable?

Experiment with the Pages Export settings for the EPUB. If this is an EPUB that you are feeding into Amazon's KDP tool for publishing on Amazon, you may be in for frustration using this export format.
