Can I use two Apple Pencils on iPad Air simultaneously?

I got a new IPad Air and Pencil Pro for Christmas. I kept my old pencil (2nd generation) but not the iPad. Can I use the old pencil with my new iPad Air as a backup pencil? I use my iPad to do illustration and am hoping that I can charge one pencil while using the other until it runs out of charge and then switch. How do I pair both of them simultaneously?
