How can I enable automatic shuffle on my 7th Gen iPod Nano?

My 7th Gen iPod Nano will no longer shuffle songs. I have read back through the manual and tapped the Shuffle in the songs list but songs are not shuffling. I do NOT have the 'Shate to Shuffle' enabled. If I am playing a song, go back to the song list and tap Shuffle, then it is will shuffle to another song. However, I want it to shuffle automatically.
