anyone have there apple 30w usb-c power adapter almost catch fire?

I contacted Apple but they told me to go to a Genius Bar. I live in northwestern Ontario. They gave me no answers and suggested I go here, so here I am. An electrician checked the socket it had been plugged into. It had nothing to do with our electricity supply.

Sorry, you had to go through this. Just curious, what Apple device(s) were you using to power with this adapter?

Since, these adapters do heat up when they are actively charging, where exactly was this charger located when this occurred? That is, was it under a desk or inside something? I'm only asking to see if there is something that was missed that may have caused this, other than a potential defective adapter.

I have reached out to Apple again and been reminded of their "One Year Limited Warranty". I guess I will never know why my 30W usb-c shot sparks and could have caused a FIRE. I had hoped this forum might answer, or at least make others aware, of the fire potential FIRE HAZARD. I did not expect this for the price that is paid for apple products. I had an apple product plugged into an apple charger. ?!

Except from their response, FYI to 'anyone':

"Visit Apple Support Communities to see posts from other users and to post your own questions discussions.apple.com. Information about Apple's One Year Limited Warranty is found at apple.com/legal/warranty."

So, it would appear to me, that LEGALLY, apple does not care if their products shoot sparks, after the warranty runs out. My suggestion to others, *** MAKE CERTAIN YOU HAVE NOTHING FLAMMABLE AROUND YOUR APPLE CHARGER WHEN ITS PLUGGED IN ***

it outputs 5volt dc which would never be able to even heat up things.

but it get input of 110 ac / 240 ac depending on where you live in the world

and that is plenty of power to make stuff melt and also to break a fuse in your electric board

so an internal defect in the transformation that transform 110/240 into 5volts could be the cause

it would be covered if the charger is under warranty Legal - Hardware Warranties - Apple

if not then it would likely not be covered but I suppose you could attempt to reach out to apples support channels (this is not a such we are all users like yourself giving advice)

This was my original contact letter: MAILED

To Whom it May Concern,

Myself and my two grown daughter’s have been using Apple phones, computer’s, tablets, charging cords, earbuds, etc., for years now with no complaints other than Apple’s proprietary nature when trying to use anything other than an apple charger for an apple product.

Which is why…..we do, one can’t get around it.  Other than my new 4 earbuds that came with nothing to charge them.  :(

I just purchased both of my daughter’s new Apple iphone 15pro’s for Christmas but now wish we would just start switching over to my husband and son’s preferred Samsung preference.

Why?  See attached.  This block shot flames!?  I had an electrician in to check the socket, perfectly fine.  We had no weather disturbances the day it happened.  I was sitting by the outlet when it happened but thought it had been something to do with my son re-stringing his electric guitar, which was not plugged in?  It took a few minutes to find the block had been the problem due to it facing the socket it was plugged into.

Any answers as to why this happened?

Thank-you for your time,"

SO, it would seem to me that "Get Support", means "buck-pass-buck-pass"

I just wanted to know why my 30w usb-c power adapter almost caught fire. For the price of apple products I was not impressed.

Thanks James

My macbook air (2022) was plugged in, shut, charging. It had not been used for at least two hours. I am not one to leave multiple pages open when using my laptop and had not prior to charging it.

The adapter was exposed and plugged into a grounded outlet fixed into a normal drywall and stud construction wall. It was the only thing plugged into the outlet and was plugged directly into the socket (not a multi plug-in adapter). The outlet in question was directly under a window in a room that runs cold due to three exposed walls.

An electrician came to check the outlet and our electrical panel. There was nothing wrong from our end.

Thanks for the additional information. I certainly do not see anything amiss with your setup and it does indicate to me that a defective adapter would be the culprit.

Although, it doesn't appear to be true in this case, Apple adapters are very well made compared to others being offered out there. FWIW, I have literally dozens of them and never have had this happen to me. Typically, I leave my Mac laptops plugged into power even when they are not being used, so these adapters do get a workout ... and, again, when they are charging they run warm to the touch.

Thanks for that. I did send them two letters with photo’s. My charger would not be under the 1 year warranty. I have no idea if they are doing a recall of that model or if mine was defective. It’s in the garbage dump now. I’ll be switching to Samsung going forward. Perhaps I am a dinosaur but if a person is concerned enough to send a letter with photo’s, twice, to their head office, I don’t think it should be met with a suggestion to go to, like you said, a “community page”. Poor service from apple.
