How can I fix QuickTime screen recording failures?

trying to record the screen and save via QuickTime with audio.

the audio is sourced from Background Music utility.

QT sets up and is running, but when I quit and wait for the save, it never happens or I get this error.

The actual display isn't turned on. Saving to desktop.

I've done a couple of very short rec'ds successfully, like 3s, but it fails with 2.5h.

Any thoughts?

normally I would recommend saving to "desktop" for such issues. but apparently, you already are doing that.

so rather than playing 20 questions, i'm thinking you should download and run the free version of EtreCheck so we can see if you have some software installed that is causing your issue. make sure you give "full disk access" to etrecheck. Learn how to use it by reading Using EtreCheck. if you need help interpreting the report, you can see how to post the report here by reading How to use the Add Text Feature When Posting Large Amounts of Text, i.e. an Etrecheck Report. and it automatically obscures sensitive things (like serial numbers) so you don't have to worry about sharing the report here.

sorry, I really dislike giving bad news, but you have a bunch of issues that need addressing. your "minor issues" section is among the most crowded I've seen. and also, you appear to have more than 675 audio plug-ins. plus a boat load of things running that could be slowing you down and may not be necessary.

if it was my Mac, I would manually move the data you want to keep to an external storage device. and then I would erase the Mac and reinstall macOS. please see Erase and reinstall macOS. that may seem drastic, but IMHO, it is the easiest way to fix your issues.

and before you start, you may want to create a bootable installer for Monterey. that can sometimes be a life saver if reinstalling macOS via internet recovery proves difficult. please see Create a bootable installer for macOS – Apple Support
