Cannot use Personalised Voice for Spoken Content

Hi there I am using Sequoia 15.4 running on Mac Silicon M1.

I have created a Personalised Voice, but I am unable to activate it for Spoken Content.

When I choose my Personalised Voice for Spoken Content, it only uses the default voice (My Personalised Voice works fine for other tools like VoiceOver).

I believe this is because the applications am I using (Microsoft Word do not have permission to use my Personal Voice. I cannot add applications to have permission as the Personalised Voice settings only provide the option to remove applications, not add them. I think Apple needs to add a "+" button to grant access to applications that don't prompt you.

Also my applications, Word, Mac Notes, Mac Pages etc, do not ask for permission when I use the Spoken Content in them so I cannot grant it to them.

I have tried 1) Rebooting 2) Giving the applications permission to Accessibility features, 3) Switching Spoken Word between several different voices and back to the Personalised Voice.

Please help!

I too just upgraded to the latest Sequoia version on my Macbook and ran into the same limitation - it only works on Live Speech, not Spoken Content. To me, this makes the feature practically useless, sorry Apple. My suggestion is, please enable it for use in Spoken Content, and the sooner the better! I'm a fiction writer and love the idea of using my personalized voice while I edit and re-write. Thanks!

Re: "First, if Personalised Voice cannot it be used with Spoken Content why does Apple allow me to select it as the voice for Spoken Content?

Surely it should not be selectable? This does not make sense."

Am no expert; the way I understand it: "Personal Voice can only be used with Live Speech"

If no Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps are available on your device, then there are no apps available to add.

Good to know you have created, and are using your Personal Voice in VoiceOver!

Am no expert in this area, yet your request to use that voice in your oter apps deserves some response. The way I understand it, a Personal Voice is created in order to speak for you when communicating verbally with others. Whereas Apple provides the voices for screen-reading etc.

If you are not already using it:

With Live Speech, you can type and have your words spoken out loud using your Personal Voice that sounds like you. Find out how to use your Personal Voice with Live Speech

To turn Live Speech on: Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Live Speech.

Apple Support's online article : Change Personal Voice settings for accessibility on Mac - Apple Support

says

" Personal Voice can be used only with Live Speech

and

with third-party apps that you allow, such as Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) apps"

In System Settings > Accessibilirt > Speech > Personal Voice > "Allow applications to use your Personal Voice"

you can "View a list of apps that you’ve given permission to use your Personal Voice.

You can add additional apps or revoke an app’s access."

It seems there is no support for apps other than AAC apps as mentioned above.

Personal Voice is designed with privacy and security in mind.

Thanks brbo for your reply, however it doesn't make sense to me.

First, if Personalised Voice cannot it be used with Spoken Content why does Apple allow me to select it as the voice for Spoken Content? Surely it should not be selectable? This does not make sense.

Second, you mention that I can "add additional apps" to Personal Voice. This is not the case. There is only an option to remove apps, not to add them.
