Can I screen record on an iPad 2 in 2025?

I have an iPad 2 that's still working. I've always wanted to record some things on it but never really figured out how to. When I search it up, all the results are for the newer products with built in screen recording function, or apps that I can't download. Is there still a way I can screen record on it now in 2025?

I have a Mac that I have tried connecting it to to record through Quicktime. Unfortunately, however, Quicktime did not pick it up as an option for something I can screen record with.

Your iPad2 is obsolete - and cannot be updated to an iPadOS version that supports screen recording.

The iPad2 cannot be updated beyond iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi+Cellular). The iPad Screen Recording feature requires iOS 11 or later.

For information, here is a list of the highest version of iOS supported by the older models of iPad (for simplicity - “generations” are shortened to a number) that are restricted in their ability to be updated:

32-bit devices (obsolete)

iPad1 - iOS 5.1.1

iPad2, iPad3 and iPad mini1 - iOS 9.3.5 (WiFi Only models), iOS 9.3.6 (WiFi+Cellular)

iPad4 - iOS 10.3.3 (WiFi Only), iOS 10.3.4 (WiFi+Cellular)

64-bit devices

iPad Air1*, iPad mini2 and iPad mini3* - iOS 12.5.7

iPad Air2, iPad mini4 - iPadOS 15.8.3

iPad5, iPad Pro (9.7"/12.9" 1st generation)* - iPadOS 16.7.10

iPad6, iPad Pro (10.5"/12.9" 2nd generation) - iPadOS 17.7.3

(*) obsolete

Newer models are all able to be updated to the current version - iPadOS 18.2.1

  • iPad Pro 13" (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9" (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11" (1st generation and later + M4)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later + M2)
  • iPad (7th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later + A17 Pro)

I just found a way to record the screen, in case anyone in the future needs this. It does need a Mac though, so unfortunately this won't work if you only have the iPad 2.

So, the Airplay on my iPad 2 still works, and thankfully it managed to pick up my Mac (MacBook Pro 2019, 16 Inch). I did have to tinker with my MacBook Airdrop settings a bit (Settings > General > AirDrop & Handoff and set "Allow Airplay for" to "Anyone on the Same Network"), but afterwards the Airplay did indeed work, and I was able to screen record using my MacBook. I had an Aggregate device set up for my MacBook so that I can screen record with audio, and that also worked to get the audio from the iPad.

Your iPad is a long-ago obsolete 32-bit architecture device. All 32-bit Apps have been retired and removed from the Apple App Store - and are no longer available. Currently available Apps are designed for 64-bit devices that have superseded 32-bit; 64-bit Apps are fundamentally incompatible with your iPad.

Unfortunately, if you wish to use screen recording, or any other feature not natively available to your iPad2, you have no alternative other than to replace your iPad with a much newer or current model iPad.
