iTunes for Windows - Bottom Scrollbar not Visible while in My Device view

I purchased a new Lenovo laptop in October of last year, and installed iTunes for Windows on it.

Since then, when in My Device view in iTunes, the bottom/horizontal scroll bar is not visible.

I did as suggested by several other sites to go into Windows Settings > Display and make sure scroll bars visible at all times was turned on, but this does not solve the problem. This is very inconvenient as I cannot sort content by various columns when creating playlists or other tasks on my phone or other devices.

I attached some screen shots to help explain my problem.

Each view is independent of every other. What that means is that the view of your iPhone's contents that you show in your screenshot only has the columns that you can see. As those columns are not wide enough to go beyond the current widow size, there is no need to show the scroll bar.

In the two views you have posted:

  • the left view shows your iTunes Library and it has at least eight columns in the view. I'll take a guess that the Genre column, which reads Sound C (which be a C or an O) is longer than width we can see. So the Genre column definitely goes beyond the visible window, making the total width of the eight columns wider than the window, hence the scroll bar
  • the right view shows the content of your iPhone and has only four columns set up for display. Although the Name column is twice the width of the Name column in your Library's view, the total width of all four columns is less than the width of your screen. Therefore, there is no need to show the scroll bar

In my current setup, I cannot alter the width of the columns in the device view (my iPod), but I can in my Library view. But that's not the point; if you want to display additional columns in your iPhone's view, right-click the header bar (the bar that has the column's titles in it) and select the additional items that you want to display from the context menu that pops up. Once the total width of the chosen columns extends beyond the width of your screen the scroll bar appears.

As a test, you can reduce the width of the iTunes window by dragging the sides inwards. I've done this, to demonstrate it to you. You can see the difference in my two screenshots below:

And...

The two screenshots are the same size and you can use the Recycle bin icon in the top left corner as a reference point:

  • in the upper screenshot (iTunes is full width on my computer's window), there is no scroll bar because all the requested columns can fit into the existing window
  • in the lower screenshot (iTunes is now reduced width, but with the same columns set up to display), the scroll bar is visible because there is now column information extending beyond the visible window

Fair enough, although I would argue that syncing with selected playlists is a more flexible and powerful approach, while still providing as much fine grained control as manual management. Switching to syncing would be a potential workaround for the current issue, as all selection and editing activity would then happen in the main library.

You can try sharing your observations with Apple via Product Feedback - Apple but it seems fairly clear Apple want Windows users to move to Apple Music for Windows, which is even less stable and capable than iTunes. Somehow I don't see iTunes getting the bug fixing attention it might deserve.

But iTunes is effectively saying that there is not. Have you checked that those columns are selected, because as of your reply, you have not confirmed that you have?

Again, this started only on this new laptop. The bottom scroll bar did not awol on my old laptop or desktop.

Doesn't matter, it's what's happening now, in this iTunes Library, that counts. As explained, each view is independent.

Right-clicking on the field headers and doing "auto resize" does nothing for me.

I didn't suggest that you try auto-size, with very good reason. If the display is already at optimum size, then Auto-size does nothing. If there are no additional columns to show, then Auto-size will not change anything. If you tapped Auto Size Column, rather than Auto Size All Columns it may have no effect.

On what do you base your assertion that there are additional columns to be displayed? Since you have tapped Auto-size, it means that you did open the context menu with the list of all headers. So, were the additional columns that you mention (genre, year and size) ticked (checked)? If they were not, then they will not be shown.

In my selection, notice that Size is not selected. What does your selection look like when you open the context menu in the phone view?

You could have tried the test I laid out in much shorter time than it took you to type your reply to me. Currently, I have no confirmation from you that you did try it or what happened when you did.

You asked a question in your initial follow-up; Am I the only participant here with these seeming incomprehensible issues? Until we go through the steps I have put forward, there is no evidence that there is a bug in iTunes that is causing this issue, so the answer to your question is currently yes.

To prove to those of you that don't believe me, here is the device view of my iPhone 12SE:

As you can see, there's about a dozen selected columns there, half of which I myself selected.

However, you'll also see that the 'Name' column is wider than the Grand frickn Canyon, and there is no horizontal scroll bar visible for me to get to the other end and short the f....ng thing.

So I'd appreciate it if even Mr. Cook himself comes on here and tells me how to fix this mess.

Thanks for replying fiend.

With all due respect, there are at least three other columns (genre, year, size) that cannot be seen because the horizontal(bottom) scroll bar is awol in device view.

Question: Is your device synced (with a selection of playlists, genres, artists, and albums) or manually managed?

My recollection is that when it is synced much of the function in the views of content on the device is limited, as is the ability to edit metadata, playlists, etc. You should be able to make a playlist folder in the library that contains all of the content that you will be syncing to the device (should that be useful to you) and be able to make any changes there, then sync to update it.

That has not been the case for me but I understand the concern. My library is backed up in three places, I review the changes before commiting to look for anomalies and I have plenty of smart playlists that help me track down inconsistencies, along with custom scripts to apply my very exacting ideas of correctly formatted metadata and file organization.

An undocumented quirk of iPhone management is that even for a manually managed iPhone every item that is copied to the device must remain connected to an entry in the library to remain on the device. With a traditional manually managed iPod you could remove certain albums from your library to reclaim some space, with the tracks remaining on the device. Do the same with an iPhone and they are unceremoniously deleted next time you attempt to make any changes to the content on the device.
