I enjoy watching some foreign language films for which subtitles are not available. What is the best way to use Translate as I watch? With Apple AI, I have been hoping this might be possible.

I would like an app that will listen to the audio from the speakers, and then provide me with a translation as the film progresses. This could be on my iPhone screen. I am experimenting using Apple Translate without much success.
If someone has tried that I would love to know what the best way to do it would be. Otherwise any advice appreciated.
While instant translation into subtitles on screen would be perfect I realise we are probably not at that stage at the moment.

Yes, that's true. VLC will show subtitles that are embedded in the video or you can download a subtitle file. For more popular films you can find subtitles online, but for many you'll be out of luck, I'm afraid. I don't know any services that offer real-time subs or dubbing.
Try google translate too. Unfortunately these apps only seem to do short passages at best, so are not useful for continuous input. I don’t know if there are 3rd party apps that may be better such a purpose.
VLC does not translate movies, it will show subtitles if they are already encoded in the movie.
Thanks. However, as far as I can tell VLC allows you to add subtitles to the movie, but the subtitles need to pre-exist which is not the case.
Am hoping for something that will work 'on the go' so to speak.

Thanks Tom. Useful to know limitations of Translate now. Maybe I am too optimistic for the moment but AI will get us there in time no doubt. Transcribing lectures etc!

So you want an app that will listen to audio coming out of your macbook speakers and translate it into text at the bottom of the movie you are watching on the screen? If not that, what exactly?
