How do I save contacts on an iPhone that I am returning?

Contacts are not generally saved on the iPhone, they are synced to a service. The iPhone uses iCloud, or one of your mail providers to sync contacts. Make sure you know where they are saved, and then when you get a new device, make sure you load that account to get access to Contacts again.
