How do you get into recovery mode on an M4 mini?

On a laptop or an iMac, the screen is active and shows the option to load recovery mode. That doesn't happen on the mini. If I hold down the bong, the system just boots normally. If I continue to hold, the monitor, connected through HDMI, is never active, and I never get the load recovery option. If I just continue to hold the power button, the computer shuts down. Is there any indication for recovery mode, perhaps some change in the power button, anything?
