Apple's Photos People and Pets: "Review More Photos" doesn't work.

In my Photo Library, there are about 65000 photos from 2002 to 2024, organised in Folders, Albums.

Most of the faces have been automatically recognised over time, since the "faces" feature exits.

When there are a few persons tagged as 'unnamed' who should be recognised as a known person, I like to use is the feature "Review More Photos"; that always helped the system "learn" and detect additional faces without effort. Just a few yes/no's and before you notice there are dozens of more new photos face-tagged.

Since I migrated the Photo Library to a new Mac Mini M4 15.2 with Photos Version 10.0 (721.0.150) last month, this doesn't seem to work anymore.

There are quite a few photos "unnamed" and each time I use "Review More Photos" on any person, the system replies "There don't appear to be any additional photos of..."

I added the name of some of those "unnamed" photos manually but this is a lot of work.

Anyone experienced the same issue ?

Mac mini, macOS 15.2

You may want to try it the other way round. When you are seeing an unnamed face in a photo, click the thumbnail of the face below the photo to open the album. Photos may have started a second album for this person and you have to merge it with the main albums for the person. When Photos opens a separate album for this person, with only a few faces, name this person to merge it with the main album, then try again "Confirm additional faces".

Now it works again. How did I do to fix this ?

I have no idea !

  • looked in "Console" app and filtered on "photoanalysisd". Found some suspicious messages
  • quit Photos, started it again creating a new empty test Photo Library
  • Imported some photos from the main photo library
  • waited. Problem remained
  • Restarted the system (reboot)
  • created yet another photo library and imported a smaller set of picture. Problem persists
  • restarted Photos App with the main photo library
  • and then the feature "Review More Photos" works again !

That is why I am no longer trying for long system up-times, but are restarting the Mac and then Photos occasionally. This will ensure that all background processes keep running or are restarted, if need be.

When Photos is taking a very, very long time to analyze the library or similar, I am keeping the Console open to see, if there are frequent crash logs or spin reports for Photos. If there are frequent crashes, I am restarting in Safe mode, to clear caches and check for older apps, that might be using unsafe frameworks and need updating.

Also there may be "bad apples" in the Photos Library, videos or image files using a legacy codec, that Photos can no longer process, or items with missing originals. Such items can cause the photos analysisd to try over and over again to analyze them and get stuck. I have tested all videos by exporting the original files and reimporting them into another library. The videos giving an error message on import I converted to a different format.
