Custom Password for Notes

I’m a little perplexed! I have 2 accounts under my iPhone notes—iCloud & On My iPhone.

I primarily use the iCloud account so have about 50 notes in there with a couple that need my phone passcode to get in.

A couple months ago I saved a note under the On My iPhone account and created a custom password for it. First time doing it, Easy peasy.

However, today I created another note under the On My iPhone account and hit lock. When i went to unlock it I used the same custom password that i used for the previous note a couple months ago but it wouldn’t take. My password hint came up with something completely different but recognizeable. I’m wondering why the new note did not get the custom password I created a couple months ago for the On My iPhone account? and where did it pull this other password from?

Im also wondering how I create a unique password for the new note as the password it prompted for can be easily guessed (which again is why I’m confused the note was even assigned that password!). Can’t seem to wrap my head around this one. Any helpful info is appreciated!

iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 17

Recovering Notes Password:

What the passcode is, is anybody's guess. So, if you have it written down somewhere, or a digital file of it, then, you can retrieve it that way. Elsewise, it is locked.

Unlocking Notes:

  1. Go Here: How to Lock Notes on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support
  2. Scroll to: If you forgot your notes password
  3. Proceed form there as necessary

You must have misread. I know all my passwords. I want to know where this random password came from & why the new locked note didn’t get assigned the password I had already created for the other note in the same folder.

Notes App Creating Its Own Password:

It’s not going to create or change a password of its own. Almost seems to be a bug. You have 2 accounts, according to your most. So, try the other password.

Restore from a Backup:

Did your ever back up your iPhone with this created with the correct password, and the same not without a password? If so, restore it from the backup.
