Why does my iPad only show half screen on TV?

The first few times I connected my iPad to the TV with a lightning cable I was getting a full screen on the TV. Then quit and I was only giving half the screen so I got a new cable but it was the same thing I don’t know why I got a full screen for the first few times. any ideas?

What do you mean by "half a screen"?

Do you mean it appears zoomed in?

Do you mean part of the image is black?

Remember, iPads have a more square screen aspect ratio than TVs as such there will be black bars on the left and right side of the screen on your TV to compensate.

Content like movies, may display in widescreen or fill the TV screen when viewed in full screen though.

Not possible, unless you were in full screen of a video or movie. The iPad's screen is square and cannot in any way fill the TV screen.

If you go into full screen while watching a movie or other piece of media it may fill it if the media is formatted as such.

If you have an Apple Silicon (M1, M2 or M4) iPad it can be set to extended mode (stage manager) to make the external screen be full by going into Settings ➜ Displays ➜ Arrangement and turning off Mirroring.

Some monitors have settings that attempt to “stretch” the display content to match the aspect ratio of the display.

This feature, if enabled, may fill the screen - while removing the black infill bars that you see when the source and display aspect ratios don't match. The stretch, while filling the visible screen, can introduce distortion (e.g., images of “people” develop strange proportions - such as short and wide).
