Just updated to 18.2. The Mail App is terrible. I just want it to be how it was, I don’t know, the entire time I’ve been in the iOS ecosystem. You know, like 10+ years.

Go to Settings>Notifications>Mail>Customize Notifications>in BADGE COUNT select All Unread Messages. Copied from someone else but seemed to work for me
Of course it does. There are roughly 6 billion people worldwide that have smart phones and most have computers. And all of them receive multiple spam messages a day. You are not unique.

Thank you Lawrence Finch! It worked! So grateful to you! I also turned off notification badges in the mail ap. Have no idea what a badge is. Hoping this change is permanent.
The three dots-list view did not do it for me. Had to turn off "show contact photos" in mail app! Hurray!
