Why does my new M4 Mac keep ejecting my external SSDs?

About 2 weeks ago I purchased a new M4 Mac mini. The SSD on the Mac mini itself is 1TB.

I use external SSD storage. I decided to buy three new SSD drives. These are all San Disk. One is 4TB. The other two are 2TB. One of the 2TB is set up as the Time Machine Back Up. The other 2TB is storage for my video editing files. The 4TB is where I save my libraries for things like Photo, Music, Documents, etc. I formatted all to APFS.

If I connect all three SSDs to the Mac mini, one of them will throw a "disk not ejected properly" message. It's a different one based on where I may connect it. If I disconnect any one of the three, the messages stop. Is the Mac mini incapable of running three SSDs at the same time. These aren't even doing high pressure work at the same time. I set Time Machine to manual so it runs only when I want it to, but it is attached.

It doesn't seem limited to a particular USB-C port. I'm using the original cables that came with each drive.

The fact that it stops if I disconnect any one of the drives tells me it's the Mac but maybe I'm asking too much of it.

I plan to check with Apple when I have more time this week.

Thank you.

Mac mini, macOS 15.1

I just wanted to give an update.

Using a Acasis powered thunderbolt 4 raid enclosure/dock, has cured all the issues.

Running x3 monitors (x2 thunderbolt & x1 on hdmi) and the enclosure/dock, with no issues. (On thunderbolt)

So it’s definitely a lack of power causing the issues when using all the ports.

Quite shocking really from Apple.

MacBook Pro had no issues, but the Mac mini and Mac mini pro can’t handle it!

I thought I provided a further update but I don't see it here. I ended up ordering the OWC 5 Port Thunderbolt Hub and I am running my 3 external SSdS from this hub. I would describe this as "almost" a 100% solution. I say "almost" as oddly after a few weeks of no problems, one of my SSDs gave an ejection failure when I had not ejected. I consider that an outlier as it hasn't happen since and it popped up weeks after no problems. Maybe ea fluke.

I'm surprised that the Mac mini doesn't supply enough of its own power to run these things. Grateful for the feedback and the suggestion of the powered hub.

Sounds like the Mac mini is not suppling enough power to run all three bus powered drives at the same time.

What you need to do, is get and test an externally-powered Thunderbolt/USB-C hub or Thunderbolt dock.

For a couple of examples:

You're welcome.

I do have a non-powered USB-C hub from U-Green. I noticed doing some testing today that if I connect one of the external SSDs into this hub, which is then connected to the Mac mini, for some reason this does not result in the same error messages. Not sure why though.

That does sound more like a weak or bad connection between the external SSD and Mac mini.

A lot of drive manufactures bid for the lowest priced cables to help up their profit.

Maybe try replacing a cable or two to see if that helps.

I would feel better exploring the powered route. I will check out the links. Thanks again.

Yes that ensures that there is more than enough power to run multiple drives and charge devices.

Just wanted to provide an update. I ordered a powered hub and in days of testing with 3 external SSDs attached, not a single disconnection. Guess the Mac mini doesn't provide enough power on its own to run all of them. I appreciate the feedback and the idea of the powered hub seems to have resolved it. Thank you!

My M4 is a Pro one, 64GB 8TB - got 2 4K Dell monitors on it, one via HDMI, the other on a back USB-C T4/5 door.

Plugging a SSD thunderbolt 4 to any of the those back doors make it disconnect non stop and as hot enough to burn hands - even the cable gets very hot.

The computer keeps working, hot when demanded, but acceptable.

Monitors don’t show anything strange, cables do not heat.

Definitely there is hardware/engineering problem that made me loose a 8TB brand new disk.

I have many others M MacBooks and Mac mini. None of them eject or burn external the same SSDs with the same cable.
