SuperDrive loads but doesn’t spin

My SuperDrive is in an OWC external case (I used it’s slot for an SSD).

It loads a disc no problem, but won’t spin. The motor just moves slightly like it’s trying to but doesn’t have the oompahs (it makes a small groan too) and then the disc is ejected.

Any help will be much appreciated…?

I have taken it a fair bit apart and reassembled, but the problem persists. Any ideas or suggestions on how to diagnose the issue?

Thanks!

Does the OWC case have its own independent power supply? If it is a "bus-powered" drive (has to scab all power from a computer USB port) it may not get enough to turn the main drive motor.

Test by removing all other USB devices and see if the drive "wakes up." if so, it needs more power to co-exist with your other USB devices. Placing a powered USB hub between the drive and the computer may help in a low-power situation.
