iPad Pages lacks top-of-keyboard-predictive text

The Pages app on the iPad lacks the keyboard-predictive text, the suggestions at the top of the keyboard. This feature would be particularly helpful for possessive endings, which otherwise take 3 taps to add. It would also offer the ability to add words to the iPad's dictionary, when it presents your officially wrong spelling as a suggestion in quotes, which you can then tap to accept and enshrine in the dictionary.

This is not the same as what I think is called "inline" predictive text, which is mostly annoying, offers only one suggestion, and never takes care of possessives.

The top-of-keyboard predictive suggestions work beautifully in the Notes app, but nowhere else. Why aren't they available across all apps? And especially in Pages?

I'm using iPadOS 18.1.1.

My iPad pages does have top of keyboard suggestions, but I don’t think I ever see possessives there.

Ah, that frozen keyboard size was the clue. Here's the post that solved it: Keyboard will not enlarge. I turned Scribble off and now the keyboard both resizes and offers predictive text at the top.

That post also explains that Scribble requires a different type of keyboard--which Notes does not have, Scribble does not work with Notes, which is a good thing, because otherwise I would never have realized that that new feature was knocking out a much more important one.

Thanks, Tom, for providing that screenshot!

Yes, that's what I'm looking for. And I'm attaching a screenshot showing that it offers possessives in Notes.

So why don't I have this in my iPad Pages?

Clearly I have the correct global, system-wide keyboard settings, since it works in Notes.

What am I doing wrong in Pages? Its settings via Settings>Apps>Pages offer nothing relevant to this. The closest to it in Pages' in-app settings is Auto-Correction>CheckSpelling, which just underscores nonstandard text in red.

Actually, there's another problem. In Notes, I can pinch-expand the keyboard to the wide style you display, or pinch contract it to the small version to allow swipe-typing. But in Pages, the keyboard does not respond to the pinch-expand gesture; it's frozen at the small size. It has a handle for repositioning, but no top bar

with suggestions. It always looks like this (which makes me think some simple setting is off, but I don't know which):
