How to activate and use Facetime & iMessage on a Mac without an iPhone

After completing the Apple I.D. requirements (without phone number)both Facetime & iMessage allow the user to sign-in effectively... However, both applications fail to work properly. Facetime will resolve visually but the create link does not work. iMessage allows the user to sign-in but drops and/or crashes within 15 to 30 seconds.

All other audio visual apps like WhatsApp or Signal appear to work flawlessly. Please advise.
