Why do my texts keep switching between RCS and SMS on iPhone?

I’m trying to talk to someone over text who has an android, but every text i send is being sent as SMS and all of theirs are being sent as RCS. It keeps flipping back and forth and it’s annoying.

You are going to want to turn off RCS in your Messages settings, then turn on Airplane mode. After that, restart your phone. Then go back in, enable the RCS setting and THEN turn off Airplane mode and it should work.

This is assuming you have the bug where your contact’s messages come through as RCS, but yours still come through as SMS. And make sure they are the one who sent the most recent message, so the latest chat came through as RCS.

If you’re not already receiving as RCS, I don’t know if this will work. Apple pls fix

I am having a similar issue with a seemingly different cause. I’m on an iPhone 16, and my friend has a Google Pixel. RCS between our phones has been very reliable, but just today I had my phone send a picture as an SMS because it had failed to send as RCS, and now it won’t stop using SMS for specifically that thread despite the fact that RCS works fine for other android owners I text. I can’t figure out how to fix this, as there is no obvious way to me to fix it for a single thread, and Googling it isn‘t helping

Yes, after I reset my networks it's always worked. I'm using a 15Pro on ios 18.3.
If yours does but only temporarily I suspect it's your cell provider's fault. It's also possible it's an ios bug, that's why I don't update anymore unless absolutely necessary.

It works just fine on my iPhone 15 Pro with iOS 18.5. But I would have updated any way. The security updates are important.

Why keep green ( text message rcs ) for what what is mean annoying for me

Your post makes little sense in English.

RCS is the replacement for SMS and MMS, and you will get messages using RCS if your carrier and the devices of the users you are contacting support it.

Having this issue too and sometimes resetting all network settings will fix it, but it seems like moving between wireless and cellular, particularly if I go outside my house where wifi starts getting weak 'triggers' the issue for a particular contact. One time I told it to send as SMS when a normal RCS message didn't go through and now it just wants to always do that for this one contact. Super frustrating.

I think I figured out the trigger.

The affected contact(s), when originally stored (via add new contact from within the Message app) are of type "phone":

But that label type does not exist.

So once the RCS function stops, only switching this label to any existing from the list, restores RCS. I assume that when the contact is initially saved, it's a currier label "mismatch" of some sort.

That's really interesting, as the contact I was having the issue with does seem to have the label "phone". Another thing I noticed is that sometimes the Messages app will show "SMS" in the text entry box, and if I type a message it'll send as SMS (even though I don't want it to) but if I kill the Messages app and go back to that contact, it'll show RCS again and then send as RCS. So for now I just know to make sure to restart the app so it doesn't flip back to SMS.

Offering a potential solution for the scenario that you are receiving RCS messages from a specific contact, but sending SMS.

  1. Make sure they're the last one to send a message and that it came in as RCS (I think this matters for some reason)
  2. Fully close Messages app (Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support)
  3. Go into Settings > Messages > RCS Messaging > Toggle off then back on
  4. Open Messages app
  5. Navigate to the problem contact -- if you're lucky it's fixed/will show RCS in the message box

To be honest this could have been a combination of things -- I tried, in no particular order:

  1. The network reset
  2. Specifically ordered airplane mode/toggle RCS on and off method
  3. Removing/re-adding the contact.
  4. Turned off RCS business messages

In the end, a variation on the simple "turn it off and back on" method worked for me, but maybe you also have to try those first. There definitely seems to be some key order of operations depending on the particular flavor of bug you're hitting.

I also tried this today, so no idea how long it will stick -- fingers crossed.
