Issues starting 2020 Macbook Pro A2289 I5 13in

Hello all,

My apologies if this has been already answered elsewhere. I have a couple of old devices, three old MBPs, this one being the newest and the one with the most hope to be repaired.

About 4-6 months ago, I completed a screen replacement and a battery replacement (I think....) which was successful. However, shortly after my MBP stopped working. Now, it turns on and chimes and reaches the Apple logo but does not present a progress bar.

I've tried plugging it to power with the adapter and tried without the adapter. No change. I've retraced my steps ensuring that nothing physical is preventing operation such as: (i.e steps I took to replace the battery and screen - no cables, wires, etc. are unattached).

Would love to hear from the community what might be wrong. I've read multiple website's recommendations where I could find info on this particular model. I've heard the touchpad could be faulty preventing the device from powering on fully, I've heard to try SMC reset (which I've tried but did not fix the issue), PRAM & NVRAM resets (which I don't remember doing), etc. I have not yet booted this device into "safe" mode.

I did replace the touchpad's ribbon cable as it looked kinda torn from an angle.

Thanks all! I don't have high hopes but like I said, it's the best candidate of the three to be repaired.

Welcome!

It is really hard to diagnose a non-starter in this setting where we can neither see nor touch your computer. All I can offer is that we see reports here of issues after an at-home battery replacement. There can be several causes for that:

The big suspect: Aftermarket batteries. Their quality is abysmal compared to Apple originals. Some work but with poor runtime; others may never work.

If the solvents required for removal get on any other parts of the computer, those part can fail.

The very act of taking apart the computer enough to get to the battery can damage delicate connectors.

Based on a long time spent in these forums, I would only have Apple service an rMBP battery. Per this Apple page:

Mac Repair and Service - Apple Support

They provide battery service for Macbook Pros as old as 2016.

Allan,

Thank you sincerely for your prompt response on the matter.

I believe that the battery I purchased was not OEM. It was definitely sourced through a third-party called ZTHY through Amazon. I've done some battery replacements on MBPs and most fail. Some devices (MBPs) don't even power up at all like one of my other three devices a A1706. I'm wondering if static is shorting out the logic board but I don't have a multimeter to check voltage, ohms, etc.
