Why is my iPhone 16 Pro Max draining battery without widgets?

Hi everyone,

I recently switched from the iPhone 15 to the iPhone 16 Pro Max, and I've noticed that the home and lock screen seem to be consuming a lot of battery (around 20%), even though I don’t have any widgets or live wallpapers enabled.

Does anyone know why this might be happening or have any tips on reducing battery usage in these areas? Any help would be appreciated!

I’ve had excessive drain from home and lock screen (or so i thought). It’s not as bad as yours but it was around 10-15% with 20min on screen time, which i thought was too high. Apparently, this is now acceptable, and noone has a solution other than the usual background app refresh, location services etc. if you updated to 18.2.1 and the issue remains, there are 2 options: try to fully reset your device and set everything from scratch or sell it. Based on several forums and many user feedback, noone can help. Mine is slightly better now at around 10% of daily usage which i still think is high, but im keeping it until s25 ultra comes out and swapping away from Apple for good. Not paying 1000+ bucks for half polished phone.

I noticed this high use of the Locked screen App with another user post within Apple Discussions. Maximum Capacity is at 98% in less than 2… - Apple Community

His complaint was regarding the the maximum charge capacity dropped to 98% with in a couple of months.

I noticed his Locked screen App is using the majority of battery each day. More than 2 hours each day.

While my iPhone PMax uses maybe 4-5 % or just a few minutes of the Lock Screen App in its battery consumption each day.

Obviously there is a different configuration of my settings than his. There are many settings from Siri, active widgets and many numerous others. That will be eating away at your battery while locked.

There might have some settings that might be helpful to reduce this particular issue,  And reducing the amount of “Dynamic Island" features, Live Activities that are active when your phone is locked could be helpful.

I am not an expert but this has help me. I have had only 28 cycles with in 75 days.

Hello Antojerik, Not sure why you are having the Battery issue, but there are a couple of things you might try and see if they will lower the battery consumption from the Home & Lock Screen. Hopefully the first one will do it.

  • Force Restart Your iPhone. Press and quickly release the Volume Up button, then the Volume Down button. Hold the Side Button until the Apple  appears. When the Apple  appears, release the Side Button. Your iPhone will shut down and restart. Log back on. Give it some time and see if that clears up the excess battery usage. If not try the next.
  • Turn off Background App Refresh. Settings > Background App Refresh > Off. Check battery Consumption.
  • Turn Off Raise to Wake. Setting > Display & Brightness > Raise to Wake > Off. Check Battery Consumption.

Hi guys, any update on the issue? I have turned off almost everything and yet Home and Lock Screen is using lots og battery.

The only feature i have on is raise to wake, but I had it on my 13 pro max and never had so high usage.. on 16 pro max most used so far is home & Lock Screen.

Basically last week each day loxk screen is in Top 2 drain for the battery...

Hey GeeZ,

Thank you for your response! I checked the battery usage by app on my device and noticed that the "Home and Lock Screen" accounted for 22% of the battery consumption. This is surprising because I don’t have any widgets on my Home or Lock Screen. I’m unsure why it’s consuming so much battery. Could you help me understand this issue?

Thank you for the response, in my case 17 minutes is 20%.. which is insane. I have never turned off the background refresh or location..

The phone was fully reset 7 days ago, because of the need of connecting it to our secure network, so it was easier to do full reset.

Not planning moving to Samsung, even with this battery drain from the home screen, still the battery life is good.. I might try some changes of the setting and see if I will be able to fix it.

I haven't updated to 18.2.1 yet, still have 18.2. I will try this as well.

Thank you!
