MacOS Base System of size about 2GB is a disk image mounted from a compressed version pulled from your Mac's ROM. it is a stripped down MacOS system used to run Recovery. There is no room on that disk image to add anything.

You also see a MacOS Base System included in an Installer image, to run Installer.

if that is the only drive you see, your Boot drive may have failed. I dearly hope you made backup copies of your files previously.

Does this happen to be the non-touchbar model? If so, the SSDs in that model have a much higher rate of failure than any other model. You can try Option Booting the laptop by holding the Option key immediately after hearing the startup chime. See if the boot volume appears as an option on the Apple boot picker menu here since Option Booting may give the SSD more time to go ready. If this works to allow you to boot, then I highly recommend making a backup immediately and do not let the laptop go to sleep or you will likely lose the SSD again....next time the SSD may not come back.

If this is the case, then I do not recommend any repairs because of all the other known & some lesser known issues plaguing these models. The money spent on repairs would be better spent going towards a new laptop.
