iPhone 16 Pro CarPlay Video Mode Flickering and Glitch Bug Issues

When I open the built-in camera on my iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18.1, I encounter an unusual issue: the screen on my Honda CRV and my FM radio both start flickering, and the radio goes in and out. Interestingly, this only happens in video mode (even without hitting the record button) and not in photo mode. I’ve tested other third-party camera apps with CarPlay, and they work perfectly. However, opening the Google app also causes flickering on my car screen (though not on the iPhone itself).


I tried the same setup with my dad’s truck, and the flickering still occurred. I’ve restarted my phone, forgotten and reconnected the CarPlay device multiple times, but nothing has resolved it. I wonder if this might be a software bug similar to the recent 4K 24fps macro issue that Apple fixed in iOS 18.0.1. I experienced that same macro issue on this iPhone, and the update did fix it.


This CarPlay video glitch started immediately after I got my iPhone 16 Pro and installed iOS 18. The odd part is that my previous iPhone 15 Pro works fine in 18.0.1, and a friend with an iPhone 16 Pro Max is also experiencing this CarPlay issue. Another unusual aspect: if I connect to CarPlay when I first start my car, I can open the camera in video mode without any flickering, but if I close and reopen the app, the flickering resumes (as shown in the video link below). Also, when I try to record, it stops by itself after a few seconds, much like the 4K 24fps macro bug issue.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue or able to test video mode with CarPlay to see if you encounter the same flickering problem? It seems to primarily affect the iPhone 16 lineup. Just to clarify, I won’t be filming while driving, but I do create travel videos as a passenger or when parked, so using video mode in these situations is essential for me. I reached out to Apple Support, but they mentioned no one else has reported this issue—which doesn’t seem accurate since my friend is experiencing the same problem on their iPhone 16 Pro Max. Any insights or potential fixes would be greatly appreciated!

I drive an Acura MDX and have the exact same issue! Additionally, my climate control and entire car electronics goes berserk!!! Therefore, it appears to be an intrinsic software issue related to the iPhone 16 Pro Max. I did mention this to an Apple employee when my phone screen was replaced, but they seem puzzled as to what may be causing it. Hopefully Apple can come up with a fix as soon as possible.

That’s great to hear that updating to iOS 18.3 stopped the Apple-built-in camera video mode flickering issue for you! Has the issue returned at all?


I also updated to iOS 18.3 and was initially excited when I was able to record one video while connected to CarPlay. Just as I was about to turn off my Honda CR-V, I decided to test it again—only to find that as soon as I reopened video mode, the flickering was back.


I tried troubleshooting by restarting my phone, but the issue persisted. Then, I disconnected my iPhone 16 Pro from my Honda CR-V’s CarPlay, forgot the device, restarted my phone, turned off my CR-V, and powered it back on. Unfortunately, after all that, the flickering issue remained.


So for me, the iOS 18.3 update did not fix the CarPlay video flickering bug.

Hi Jahnnalee,


I just ‘upgraded’ my long serving 8 years 64 gb Iphone XR recently to 256 gb Iphone 16 pro. My phone now is running on IOS 18.1.1. I have not called Apple Support yet as I have a feeling that the response will be dissapointing (I do feel their field technical team at the store also dont know how to address the issue and will suggest for refund/device change, which I dont want to do it at the moment. I would rather wait and see on any new development on this). So far, my phone works great on other things (based on 1 week usage). Only this annoying Carplay bug that I need to deal with.


I am very hopefull that this issue will be addressed in the next update of not soon but surely.

That’s great to hear you’re not experiencing the issue anymore! I’m also on 18.2.1, but unfortunately, I’m still dealing with flickering and stuttering in video mode on the Apple-built-in camera. Interestingly, other camera apps work perfectly fine, and the built-in camera works in photo mode without any problems.


When you updated to 18.2.1, did your camera’s video mode start working right away when connected to CarPlay, or did you have to disconnect and reconnect CarPlay first? What was your process? I’m glad it’s working for you now, though I have to admit, I’m a bit jealous since mine is still acting up!
