Text msg recipients red after 18.1 update

After updating to 18.1 on Oct 28, 2024 on my iPhone 13, When I send a text msg to 3 friends as a group (1 iPhone and 2 android), their names and numbers turn red when I go to enter the message. This was not happening before this update. Previously I saw 1 blue and 2 green as expected. They do however get the messages.

I was getting the red names in group texts too. This article on RCS helped explain it. Apparently it has replaced SMS on iPhone so our iPhone to Android work better together. Article has instructions on how to check if your carrier supports RCS and if not how to disable RCS.

But if your carrier supports RCS (my Verizon does), and if you are getting the red names, it instructs you to restart your phone. I did and the red names disappeared. Yay.

“RCS is a superior messaging standard to SMS, now available on iOS 18. It offers several features, including read receipts, typing indicators, and higher-quality file sharing between Android and iPhone users. Unfortunately, for a handful of users, RCS is not working on their iPhones even after updating to iOS 18.” Sounds like a bug? Do you have the watch?

Interesting. As of yesterday, when I send the daily text msg to 3 users (2 android and 1 ios) the names all turn green. I did read of encrypting issues when msgs are sent to combo of android and ios. Android to android is secure and ios to ios is secure but for now mixed user text messages are not. I am not sending anything that needs encryption so I don't care. Hard to determine if problems are with apple or carriers. I have T-Mobile which does support RCS. I guess patience is the key.
