When watching a video or listening to music, if I close the lid, the audio continues to play. I have to go back in and manually turn it off before closing the lid. This is a recent problem. It was not previously happening.

Your iPad is likely working as intended. By design, music or other media playing from the native Music App will continue to audibly play after closing the iPad's cover - or clicking the sleep/wake button.
This feature is intended to allow continued listening while the iPad is otherwise conserving power in its low power state with the screen switched off.
